- Declan Cashin
- I'm 28, from Kilkenny originally and living in Dublin for the past six years. I graduated with an MA in Journalism from DIT in 2006. I work as a feature writer for the Irish Independent and the Irish Examiner. I worked in the Irish Daily Star for 18 months as a news and features subeditor, before going full-time freelance in January 2008. Over the years I've also reviewed books for The Irish Times, as well wording it up for Gay Community News (GCN), the Sunday Tribune, the Irish Daily Mail, The Event Guide, The Dubliner and The Spanner, as well as UCD Today and UCD Connections magazines. I'm occasionally known to pop up on The Last Word on Today FM and on various shows on NewsTalk 106-108FM, such as Tom Dunne, Lunchtime with Eamon Keane, The Right Hook, Culture Shock, and Weekend Blend, and have also made censors nervous on Spin, Phantom and RTE 2FM on Dave Fanning's show. I've made some inroads into TV, appearing on The Morning Show with Sybil and Martin, and Midday (pre-Sisterhood takeover), both on TV3. Watch out Tubridy! Obama-Clinton, Clinton-Obama – either dream team is McCain’s worst nightmare. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama can easily make that nightmare a reality for him right now. Here’s how:
Both publicly pledge that if are nominated for President, the other candidate will be their first choice for the Vice Presidential spot.
This immediately puts a stop to attacks on the other, or calling their ability into question. They can still debate the issues and clarify their differences, but the main focus of their anger and outrage can now be directed at the Bush-McCain policies of the past 8 years.
The enthusiastic support of the other is exactly what each candidate will need in the fall to win. Each appeals to the voters the other has the hardest time attracting. If they combine their strengths – “hope” and “work” - they both will almost certainly be in a position to lead America out of the mess we are in.
I agree that they should form the ticket now and stop tearing each other apart - leave that to the boo-hiss pantomime baddies we call the Republicans.
I want Obama to be the nominee - we've seen a side to the Clintons in this race that is uuuuuugly - but I can't see him accepting a Veep spot with her at the top, and she certainly won't accept the offer from him. This whole race could inevitably boil down to the fact that the Democrats never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity!
